When you picture a ray, what do you imagine? Is it an Eagle ray gliding over a coral formation, or a Blue Spotted Ray hiding under a coral colony? Or even the Manta Ray doing acrobats at a cleaning station?
In this programme, you’ll discover what defines a ray, understand how they differ from sharks, learn where they live, what they feed on, and how to tell one type of ray from another.
Take the SSI Manta & Ray Ecology course and learn to identify Rays.
During the dives, you will learn to identify various ray species, such as blue-spotted stingrays and their larger relatives, while observing their distinctive feeding habits, interactions with cleaner fish, and graceful swimming styles.
Your instructor will also emphasise key safety guidelines, ensuring you keep a respectful distance to avoid disturbing these magnificent creatures.
These dives will not only deepen your understanding of rays but also offer unforgettable encounters with some of the ocean’s most fascinating inhabitants.
MANTA & RAY ECOLOGY SCHEDULE
Day 1 - Manta & Ray Ecology
AM – Meet up with your instructor and go through theory, expand your knowledge of Rays around Koh Tao and prepare your dive equipment.
PM – Head out on the dive boat and begin your two dives, using slates and other tools to locate and observe Rays, using their features and behaviour to help identify them. Upon your return, complete the paperwork and celebrate your achievement!
PREREQUISITES
Before beginning the SSI Manta & Ray Ecology Course, we need you to be a SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). A higher rating of Advanced Adventurer would be even better!
Why? With marine conservation, we are conducting most of our scuba diving in very close proximity to the coral reefs. We need our students to be certified divers and of an advanced enough level, that they can control their position very comfortably underwater.
If you do not have the SSI Open Water Diver certification yet, you can take it and the SSI Advanced Adventurer Diver Course to boost your underwater skills.
