Reef Check Surveys

Reef Check is the most complete coverage of the marine ecosystem available in a short course today.

Reef Check Eco Divers can contribute to surveys throughout the world since they use a standardized technique.

We conduct long term monitoring along permanent transects to provide data about the health of coral reefs around the island. These studies have been ongoing for over a decade.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

Training

We call upon Reef Check Eco Diver certified divers and plan our next survey to one of our Reef Check sites.

Get Wet

Each team has a specific focus task of surveying the fish, invertebrates or the substrate.

Recording

Taking data of what we see on 2 transect lines over 2 dives we have an overall picture of the ecosystem.

Submission

Returning to land, we unpack our gear and submit the data to the global database.

WHY DO REEF CHECK SURVEYS ?

Using Reef Checks globally standardized scientific protocol, this program collects valuable data to establish the status of coral reefs worldwide. The data is analyzed and used locally by marine park managers, nationally by fisheries and environment managers, and internationally by organizations, including United Nations agencies, to help better track and care for coral reefs

The data helps us to identify trends in any changes taking place over time and produce management strategies to improve areas where necessary through education, research, and restoration.

REEF CHECK SURVEY FACTS

Reef Check was founded in 1996 and is the world’s largest international coral reef monitoring program involving volunteer recreational divers and marine scientists.

Reef Check method was designed to produce a standardized global technique which can be used by citizen scientists all over the world to monitor coral reefs. It’s active in 82 countries and territories.

Reef Check is a non-profit organization leading citizen scientists to promote stewardship of sustainable reef communities worldwide.

The world’s reefs are changing fast, and it is up to us to ensure that reefs are around for future generations.

Reef Check provide invaluable data to help manage and monitor resources. Without this information, how do we know they are changing?
