Nudibranchs are particularly sensitive to environmental changes, making them excellent indicators of water quality and ecosystem stability. Studying their distribution, diet, and reproductive habits helps scientists assess the impacts of climate change, pollution, and habitat degradation. This specialised knowledge is essential for conservation efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems and the countless species that rely on them.

Take the SSI Nudibranch Ecology course and become a Critter expert!

During the dives, you’ll explore some of the island’s most biodiverse dive sites, focusing on reef structures, sandy patches, and concealed areas where Nudibranchs are often found. Guided by your instructor, you’ll apply identification techniques to recognise species based on their distinctive colours, shapes, and patterns.

You’ll also document the behaviours and habitats of the Nudibranchs you encounter, observing their interactions with prey, predators, and other marine life. These dives will include practicing skills such as photographing or sketching these captivating creatures, enabling you to study them in greater detail and improve your identification accuracy for future dives.

PREREQUISITES

Before beginning the SSI Nudibranch Ecology Course, we need you to be a SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). A higher rating of Advanced Adventurer would be even better!

Why? With marine conservation, we are conducting most of our scuba diving in very close proximity to the coral reefs. We need our students to be certified divers and of an advanced enough level, that they can control their position very comfortably underwater.

If you do not have the SSI Open Water Diver certification yet, you can take it and the SSI Advanced Adventurer Diver Course to boost your underwater skills.
